Tuesday 14 th July 1789: Fear hung over Paris. The city swirled with rumours, revolts, and, of course, decapitations. What a sight it must have been! It was on this day that the most pivotal revolution in history was triggered. The day of the Storming of La Bastille. The event which led to the history of France and, indeed, Europe to be changed indefinitely.
On the morning of July 14th, the revolutionaries were eager to defend themselves and their country. But how could they do this? Without weapons, they felt helpless against the heavily armed soldiers of the ancient regime? Where could they go to defend themselves? The answer: Hotel des Invalides, a military hospital and residence for retired soldiers. A building sure to be full of rifles and artillery. This is where your tour will begin – The Hotel des Invalides – where the bloody revolt began. Now the insurgents were armed but without gunpowder. Alas, the weapons are useless. And yet, as a revolutionary shouted out, “There’s powder at the Bastille!” The crowd rallied and marched toward the Bastille fortress.
As you follow the footsteps of the first revolutionaries through Paris, you’ll visit the ironically named Place de la Concorde and learn how this historic area became a stage for thousands of brutal executions and bloody murders.
Your next destination will be the Palais-Royal, where intellectuals prepared for the popular uprising. Passing by the Hotel de Ville you will finally reach the Bastille. Here you’ll see the jail where the insurgents were imprisoned, and learn about the governor who refused to open its doors and help the revolutionaries. After our role-play of the history of the French Revolution, we’ll return to the modern day and enjoy a drink in a typical Parisian café. As you sip on your favourite drink, you’ll discover whether your character made it out alive and kept his head or not.

The French Revolution tour was fabulous. Our tour guide was one of the best tour guides we have ever had, in any city. We learned so much! The next time we take a tour in Paris, it will be through them.

We were 5 and strolled along from the Invalides to the Palais Royal as Sophie, with our very professional and highly qualified guide, told us all we had to know about this historical moment. The whole family loved it.
Patrick B
Doing the French Revolution tour was one of the very last things the family did during our short stay in Paris. Sophie, the guide, was very knowledgeable and engaging. We learned quite a bit about the people involved and got to see where it all happened.
