The Ultimate Guide to Amalfi Coast with Kids
A trip to Italy is incomplete without a visit to the gorgeous Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast is a picturesque stretch of coastline located in the southern part of Italy along the Gulf of Salerno. It is known for its stunning views, charming villages, and beautiful beaches. The area is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world to experience its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. If you’re planning on visiting the Amalfi coast with kids, here is what you need to know to plan a perfect holiday:
Planning for Your Trip to Amalfi Coast with Kids
The best way to ensure a smooth experience for your family is to make your bookings in advance or even hire a local tour guide to help you navigate and find the best deals. Here are the things you need to consider while planning the trip:
Getting to the Amalfi Coast Easily with Children
The closest international airports to get to the Amalfi Coast are Rome and Naples. From there, we recommend getting on the high-speed train to Salerno, as it is the best option when travelling with kids. Salerno is situated at the end of the coast and is well connected to the main towns on the Amalfi Coast by ferries throughout the day.
Those flying into Naples could also opt to get the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. But we don’t recommend this option as these tend to get extremely crowded, especially during peak season times.
We do not recommend driving to the coast either as the streets are narrow, and you could be stuck in traffic for hours.
Where to Stay on Amalfi Coast with Kids
The Amalfi Coast is lined with pretty towns that can be great to explore. However, we recommend staying in a town that is central and well-connected. Sorrento is the biggest town near the coast that is well connected by buses and ferries. But if you want to set up a base right in the middle of everything, you could also choose to stay in Amalfi, Minori or Maori.
Best Amalfi Coast Towns for Kids
No matter where you decide to stay, once you’re on the coast, you can easily get around using the buses or the ferries. We recommend the ferries as they are reliable and you can avoid getting stuck in traffic. However, in the summer months, the ferries tend to get sold out easily, so make sure to book them online or as soon as you get to the coast.
Now that you know how to navigate around the coast, here are the best Amalfi Coast towns to visit with kids:
Amalfi
Amalfi is a beautiful village with plenty to see and explore. It has an important history, and you can visit the duomo, walk through the pretty whitewashed alleys and admire the architecture.
The picturesque village also has plenty of restaurants, pizzerias and osterias for all budgets, so you will have plenty of options to choose from.
Positano
Positano is another gorgeous town on the Amalfi Coast. You might recognise it from all the pictures on social media. It is known as the vertical town and will surely be interesting for the kids. However, it can be difficult to walk all the way up to the top, especially with toddlers and kids in strollers. So keep that in mind while planning your trip.
Ravello
Another quaint town on the Amalfi Coast, located on the top of the mountain between the town of Amalfi and Minori is the town of Ravello. The town offers stunning views of the coast and is relatively crowd-free, making it the perfect town on the Amalfi Coast for kids. Make sure to stop by Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo if you choose to visit Ravello on your trip to the Amalfi Coast.
Minori
Another quiet town that makes the perfect stop for families is Minori. This beautiful town sits between Maiori and the town of Amalfi. Minori has a small quiet beach, too, making it a great spot for those looking to spend a nice beach day away from the crowds.
